Introduction to BEC

Experimental apparatus. This is a close-up of the center of our experiment. At the very top of the image is a white circle. This is a mirror which allows our camera (out of the picture to the right) to look down into the vacuum chamber. On the lower left there is a round vacuum port with twelve thick wires going into it. These wires (tubes, actually) carry the electrical current into the cloverleaf trap. Just above the port with the cloverleaf trap is a little blue box. This is where we feed radio frequency signals into the trap to force the atoms to evaporate and to couple pulses out of the atom laser. About mid-way up on the right is a vacuum port with a window in it. This is where one of the laser beams used to trap the atoms enters into the chamber.
