CUA Seminar – Amar Vutha: On the benefits and pitfalls of crystal-gazing as a means of scrying

Location:MIT 2-190
Amar Vutha, University of Toronto
Ten Minute Talk:"An optical tweezer array of laser-cooled polyatomic molecules" by Nathaniel Vilas, Harvard

The absence of experimental signatures of beyond-Standard-Model physics
at colliders and dark matter detectors motivates us to look for improved
ways to find new physics. In this context, solid-state systems —
ensembles of atoms and molecules trapped in crystals — offer
interesting advantages for realizing sensitive high-SNR searches for new
physics. I will introduce some of the challenges and opportunities
presented by solid-state systems, from a simple-minded atomic
physicist’s perspective, and discuss progress on an experiment searching
for time-reversal symmetry violation in nuclei.
