Self-correcting quantum memories provide passive protection of quantum information from noise, eliminating the need for active error correction. In this talk, I will discuss layer codes, a new class of 3D stabilizer codes that achieve optimal scaling of code parameters and energy barrier, making them promising candidates for self-correcting quantum memories. I will first outline the construction and parameters of random layer codes. Then, I will present two decoding algorithms and describe numerical simulations of memory times of random layer codes. Finally, I will show that layer codes exhibit partial self-correction. Our results indicate that partial self-correction is more common than expected, as it arises solely from a diverging energy barrier.
