Cold molecules are valuable for experiments in physics and chemistry including quantum collisions and reactions, high-precision measurements, and quantum information research. The direct laser cooling approach can yield a variety of new cold molecular species with a range of useful applications. Here I discuss the motivations and challenges involved in cooling and manipulating both light and heavy diatomic molecules, and their applications in experimental studies of quantum chemistry and fundamental symmetries.
