Long-lived electron and nuclear spin qubits in diamond: AMO physics meets solid-state
Location:26-214
Coherent manipulation of quantum mechanical systems is an outstanding challenge in quantum science and technology. While isolated atoms and ions are known for their excellent coherence properties, the noisy environment associated with the solid state makes it challenging to obtain robust, coherent manipulation of isolated systems (quantum bits). I will discuss our experiments that demonstrate addressing, preparation, and coherent control of individual nuclear spins in the diamond lattice at room temperature. We have measured coherence times exceeding milliseconds, and observed coherent couping to nearby electron and nuclear spins. Our results show that coherent manipulation of individual qubits in the solid state is possible with coherence properties approaching those for isolated atoms and ions. The resulting electron-nuclear coupled system can serve as small processor nodes in a quantum network coupled by optical photons.
